police officers mounted an unauthorised road block around Former ITC Park along Onitsha-owerri road.
One of the police officers stopped a tricycle driver popularly known as Keke drivers to collect N50, unaware that the truck behind the Keke had a faulty brake.
The truck hit the Keke and the Keke hit a woman standing by the road side.
All the 5 people inside the keke died including the woman who was hit by the Keke.
This woman wearing a black blouse in the picture below was carrying a 5 months old baby girl who hit her head on the road but thank God the girl is alive and receiving medical attention at a hospital close to the scene of the accident. The late womans husband who has been crying uncontrollably said the girl is their first child.Trust Onitsha people, riot followed immediately,
The angry mob started destroying properties and set some houses on fire.
Ifeanyi Mgbenka Okija-Amaka, a social media marketer who witnessed the sad incident said some opportunist decided to use the riot as an avenue to steal.
He said:
I saw over 5 generators been moved, Car engine stolen, Hilux got burnt,
People started robbing people,
I managed to escape with 2 of my phones
One of the policemen were caught, after an attempt to gun down a tout who collected his gun and disappeared.
He was beaten black and blue by the angry mob and was saved by SARS officers who arrived at the scene and made everybody walk with their hands on their heads.
Shops were closed and everyone was ordered to go home in order to restore peace to Onitsha City.
