According Maryam Abubakar, the Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state, the petrol tanker lost control and went up in flames, killing several people. Eyewitnesses said the petrol tanker after losing control tried to avoid a head-to-head collision with a golf car. The tanker, then skidded off the highway and burst into flames.
Abubakar wrote: "This evening, Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai visited Tafa, Kagarko Local Government on the Kaduna/Abuja highway, after a tragedy occurred yesterday, when a petrol tanker lost control and went up in flames, killing several people. "Mallam El-Rufai sympathised with the people of Tafa and expressed sadness over the lives lost. The Governor also inspected the new Trailer Park under construction in the area. "Another Trailer Park is being constructed at Maraban Jos, along the Kaduna/Zaria express way, Igabi Local Government."
