The governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for
Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu is facing opposition in his party in
the state but he is not having things easier nationally as President
Muhammadu Buhari who is known to abhor corruption has reportedly told
Audu, who has been at different times alleged of corruption, to remove
his (Buhari’s) pictures from all the campaign and promotional materials
for the election.
According to Per Second News, a statement from the Presidency said: “The
attention of the president has been drawn to the pictures and news
flying around that President Muhammadu Buhari has adopted the
candidature of Prince Audu Abubakar. Let it be known that the President
has not endorsed the candidature of both the APC Bayelsa and Kogi
candidates; he is yet to do the official endorsement pending when all
the conditions of His Excellency are met.
“His Excellency,
Muhammadu Buhari has therefore ordered the removal of his pictures from
the campaign materials of Prince Audu Abubakar and has directed the
Director General Prince Audu Abubakar Campaign Organization to comply
with this directive effective immediately,” the statement signed by
presidential media aide Femi Adesina, said.
The president had
backed out of the National campaign committee of Prince Abubakar Audu at
a recent meeting with the APC stakeholders, owing to the integrity of
the candidate and his unconvinced answer to the allegation of the
embezzlement of N11 billion by the EFCC.
Vice President Yemi
Osibanjo, who was said to have been made head of the National Campaign
Committee for the coming Kogi governorship election for APC, reportedly
opted out at the last minute of the inauguration of the committee in
Abuja, apparently due to similar reasons. The APC Chairman, Chief John
Odigie Oyegun, had since appointed Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger
State as the chairman of the campaign committee in place of Osinbajo.
