US Embassy in Moscow Faces Cold War-Era Harassment

One American diplomat's tires were slashed. Another's personal email was hacked. Still others reported mysterious break-ins.

The incidents are all signs, U.S. officials and experts said, that aggressive, Soviet-era counterintelligence tactics are back in fashion in Russia.

The number of incidents targeting American diplomats in Moscow has increased in recent years to levels not seen since the Cold War, officials said. Taken together, they paint an escalating pattern of intimidation and harassment that is believed to be led by Russia's Federal Security Services (FSB), a successor to the Soviet KGB.

The trend has alarmed officials back in Washington, who have complained about the treatment to Russian officials at the highest levels, including President Vladimir Putin.
Officials said the level of harassment increased sharply this year as U.S.-Russia relations plunged to their lowest level in decades amid the Ukraine crisis. They, and others interviewed for this article, spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss sensitive diplomatic and security matters.

The embassy first noticed an uptick when anti-government protests began in late 2011. Embassy officials observing the rallies were tailed closely by Russian security agents. It marked first ripples of a tidal wave of anti-Americanism, whipped up by state-run media.

The drumbeat really began to pick up, however, after Putin returned to the Kremlin in 2012. In a particularly egregious breach of diplomatic protocol, some of the most conspicuous and aggressive actions targeted Michael McFaul, who was the U.S. ambassador until last February.

The concern was noted in a periodic audit by the State Department's internal watchdog, which was published late last year.

"Across Mission Russia, employees face intensified pressure by the Russian security services at a level not seen since the days of the Cold War," the Office of Inspector General wrote.

The report referenced a "separate classified annex" on security issues that has not been made public. Officials familiar with the annex said it devoted more attention to harassment of embassy staff than previous reports.

In a rare public acknowledgement of the issue, when asked about the IG's report, embassy spokesman Will Stevens told ABC News: "Embassy and State Department officials have discussed issues of harassment of American staff with various interlocutors within the Russian Government."

According to two officials, President Obama complained about the treatment during a meeting with President Putin. Earlier this month, Secretary of State John Kerry also confronted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, two other officials said.

Some of the alleged Russian actions seemed petty. In several instances, U.S. officials returned home to find their belongings had been moved or a window left open in the middle of winter. American diplomats have also been trailed more overtly by Russian security agents.

Others attempted to interfere with diplomatic work, like disrupting public meetings with Russian contacts. Uniformed guards provided by Russia to stand outside the embassy, ostensibly for protection, have harassed visitors and even employees trying to enter the building.

Russians who work or meet with the embassy have also been intimidated, U.S. officials said. Several had been warned by shadowy individuals to discontinue their contacts with American officials or face unspecified hardships. Russians authorities have also stepped up pressure on programs run by the U.S. embassy.

Earlier this month, a pair of American reporters conducting a journalism workshop in St. Petersburg, in cooperation with the embassy, were hauled to court for alleged visa violations even though they were able to run a similar program under the same type of visa on an earlier trip.

Experts say the goal of these intrusive actions is different from covert surveillance or attempts to recruit spies, which have intelligence value. This is all about psychological pressure.

"It's not only a way of getting the embassy staff off balance, it's making people think of them as toxic and not worth talking to, not worth being seen with," said Mark Galeotti, a professor at New York University who specializes in Russian security matters.

Life under constant surveillance has long been the accepted reality for American officials working in Russia. They arrive with the expectation that their every conversation will be monitored and every movement followed (they also earn a pay bonus because that environment qualifies Russia as a "hardship post").

Most officials said they do not feel their physical security is threatened. Still, Russia's security apparatus has not shied away from using surveillance in the past to punish pesky diplomats.

In 2009, the same Russian security services were believed to be behind an Internet video showing a married American diplomat under surveillance and then appearing to have sexual relations with another woman, a so-called "honeytrap." The embassy at the time denounced the tape as a fabrication in retaliation for the diplomat's work on human rights in Russia.

The current string of incidents, however, seems more broadly aimed at treating the United States with hostility. In that sense, Ambassador McFaul was public enemy No. 1.

The inspector general's report described the ambassador's treatment as "a level of petty and more serious harassment far exceeding that experienced by his predecessors."

"Unwarranted public criticism and intrusive surveillance were common," the report said.

Ambassador McFaul was followed almost everywhere he went in an aggressive, at times threatening way by both Russian security agents and pro-Kremlin television stations, even while attending private events with his family.

In one notably flagrant episode, according to officials, McFaul was stranded in the Russian Foreign Ministry parking lot after police stopped his driver for a minor infraction and revoked his driver's license on the spot.

The ambassador himself frequently complained publicly about his treatment. He eventually lashed out on Twitter, alleging that someone had been hacking his inbox and tapping his phones.

McFaul, now a professor at Stanford University, declined to comment.

Veteran diplomats said they were shocked by McFaul's treatment, but added that they faced similar harassment as lower level officials in Moscow during the depths of the Cold War.

"Security services have traditions of behavior. Certainly, our hosts in Moscow do. They are employing old techniques and patterns of behavior that are familiar," said James Collins, the U.S. ambassador to Russia from 1997 to 2001 and now at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Collins has witnessed the ebbs and flows of U.S.-Russian relations, dating back to his time as a graduate student in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and, later, when he served at the embassy in the 1970s and again during the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Even in relatively friendly times in the 1990s, he said, U.S. staff members knew they were being watched. The tactics described today, however, were similar to ones he and his fellow diplomats endured in the 1970s.

"Right now, I think we are in a hostile environment in Moscow where the authorities are indeed sending the message that Americans are to be considered with suspicion," Collins said.

Lagos indigenes to hold mass protest today over 2015 elections

Ahead of 2015 poll, a group, Committee of Lagos State Indigenes (CIALS), is set to stage a mass protest today in the state.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the group, led by retired judge, resolved to hold the protest to compel all the political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to field only full-blooded Lagosians as candidates, eyeing governorship and senate seats.

According to findings, the demand of the group, which will lead to street protest at the Governor’s Office and the Lagos State House of Assembly, Alausa, Ikeja is that indigenes of Lagos are no longer prepared to have non indigenes rule over them as governor or senators.

The group, in a message made available to Nigerian Tribune stated that: “Committee of Lagos Indigenes will be out this week to protest the need for the emergence of full indigene of Lagos as party candidates.”

A source confided in Nigerian Tribune that the message, which the group wanted to pass across is that come 2015, any political party desirous of their votes must ensure that it fields full-blooded indigenes as their governorship and senatorial candidates.

Uefa reduces CSKA stadium ban

 Uefa reduces CSKA stadium ban
The Russian club's suspension has been shortened and their fine halved after their appeal was part-upheld by Uefa's Appeals Body

Uefa has announced it has reduced CSKA Moscow’s stadium ban on appeal to two games, suspending the final match of their original punishment for the behaviour of supporters in a recent European game.

The Russian club were initially prohibited from admitting the general public for three home games and fined €200,000 following ugly scenes at their 5-1 Champions League loss to Roma in Italy in September.

The club’s fans were found guilty of throwing flares onto the pitch and instigating fights with the home support, while there was also a banner with a racist slur being held aloft in the CSKA section.

But now Uefa’s Appeals Body has reduced the suspension and halved the fine after the Russians lobbied for leniency.

“CSKA's appeal has partially been upheld. Therefore the original decision of the Uefa Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body is modified as follows:

“CSKA have been ordered to play their next three Uefa competition matches as host club behind closed doors. The latest is suspended for a probationary period of five years.

“The Russian team has also been fined €100,000.

“CSKA remain banned from selling tickets to their fans for the next two UEFA Champions League group stage games which the club will play as the visiting side.”

US Army to Quarantine Troops Who Were Fighting Ebola

The Army has decided that troops returning from deployments to Liberia should be quarantined so they can be monitored for possible exposure to the Ebola virus and a general was among the first people affected.

The order immediately affected up to a dozen soldiers who returned to their home base in Italy this weekend, including Maj. Gen. Darryl Williams, the former top U.S. commander in Liberia.

"Out of an abundance of caution the Army directed a small number of personnel, about a dozen, that recently returned to Italy to be monitored in a separate location at their home station of Vicenza," Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said today. "None of these individuals have shown any symptoms of exposure."
The Army later released a statement confirming that the decision was made by Gen. Ray Odierno, the Army chief of staff.

"The Army Chief of Staff has directed a 21-day controlled monitoring period for all redeploying soldiers returning from Operation United Assistance," the statement said. "He has done this out of caution to ensure soldiers, family members and their surrounding communities are confident that we are taking all steps necessary to protect their health."

Williams transferred command of Operation Unified Assistance on Saturday to Major General Gary Volesky, who commands the 101st Airborne Division. Williams and his staff returned to his command of U.S. Army Africa which is based in Vicenza, Italy. The order will also apply to several dozen more Army personnel returning to Vicenza later in the week.

Warren said that the decision was made by the Department of the Army and that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is aware of their decision.

There are 882 military personnel assigned to Operation Unified Assistance in Liberia and Senegal. They are being sent mainly to build Ebola treatment units and provide the infrastructure needed for additional treatment. They will not be providing health care to Ebola patients and will have minimal contacts with the general population.

Warren said there was no one incident that triggered the Army's decision as the personnel in question did not have direct contact with Ebola patients. A Defense official said the Army made it's decision over the weekend.

Man United agree permanent €56 million Falcao deal

Man United agree permanent €56 million Falcao deal
Terms have been established and signed on the transfer and a €305,000-a-week salary, with United fully expected to activate the move in the summer

By Greg Stobart

Manchester United have agreed and shaken hands on a €56 million deal to sign Radamel Falcao permanently when his loan move ends at the end of the season, Goal can confirm.

United finalised terms with Monaco and Falcao when his €8m season-long loan switch from the French club was sealed on the last day of the summer transfer window.

The 20-time English champions will have the option to activate the agreement at the end of the season if they are satisfied with Falcao’s performances and fitness. It is understood all parties fully expect the deal to be made permanent.

Falcao currently receives a salary package worth around €305,000 per week, and United have agreed and signed paperwork on the same terms should the switch materialise next summer.

Falcao’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has a close relationship with United executives and the striker has expressed his desire to stay at the club beyond this season.

Despite the perception that Falcao's move was a last-minute swoop which only materialised in the final hours of the transfer window, United had been negotiating various terms with Mendes for a number of weeks.

But with the deadline approaching, all parties decided on a season-long loan move and the details of a permanent move were agreed and signed upon.

The loan agreement gives United the opportunity to assess Falcao’s form and fitness after the serious knee injury that ruled him out for the second half of last season and caused him to miss the World Cup.

A transfer next summer will also be reflected more favourably in United’s financial accounts having spent more than €190m in the transfer market over the summer.

Falcao has scored one goal in five Premier League appearances for United but missed Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea after sustaining an injury in training last week.

Juventus managing director has claimed this week that Falcao came close to joining the Italian champions in the summer before United stepped in with a better offer.

"We were following him and there was contact," Marotta told RAI. "We were very close to [signing] Falcao and the player preferred Italy and our colours, but then United came forward and they have much more spending power than we do so the deal broke down."

Another US school bans Nigerian girl from classes over Ebola

Another United States (US) school has banned a Nigerian student from attending classes because of an apparent ignorance on the country’s status on the Ebola virus, in violation of the United Nations (UN) advisory, Empowered Newswire reports.

Local media reports in Milford, Connecticut State, stated that a Nigerian-American girl, who just returned from a visit to Nigeria earlier this month, has been banned from attending school in Milford by the school district.

About two weeks ago, a small community college in Texas, Navarro College, denied admissions to two Nigerian applicants on the grounds that they were coming from a country with the Ebola virus. This was after Nigeria had not recorded a new Ebola infection in almost 40 days-way past the 21-day incubation period.

Last week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Nigeria and Senegal free of Ebola, after 42 days of no new infection case reported.

Earlier in the week, the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, expressed concern at “the recent restrictions put in place in several countries and localities applying to people who have travelled to the main Ebola-affected countries.”

According to the Secretary-General, “the best way for any country to protect itself from Ebola is to stop the outbreak at its source in West Africa.”

But a Nigerian-American girl in the equivalent of Primary Three, has been asked to stay away from school in Milford, CT, because of a recent travel to Nigeria. As a result, the father is now suing the school. Local reports quotes Mr Stephen Opayemi as filing the lawsuit on Tuesday.

According to the reports, “the family travelled to Nigeria for a wedding October 2 through October 12. When they returned on the 13th, the family was told the girl couldn’t return to school for three weeks.

This is coming even after the WHO has declared Nigeria Ebola-free.

US media reports has in fact been very upfront in reporting over and again that “Nigeria is not one of the three main countries considered the “hot zone” of the Ebola outbreak,” in West Africa.

According to the report, Opayemi said the school system told him there was too much concern and it was a safety precaution.

The school system also said there was a lot of confusion and the ruling was due to the climate of fear.

In his court filing, Opayemi noted that the According to court paperwork, Milford School authorities threatened that if the young Nigerian girl attended class “she would removed from the school by police.”

Why I dumped PDP —Tambuwal

SPEAKER of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Waziri Tambuwal, on Wednesday, identified institutionalised corruption within the PDP as one of the reasons he left the party.

Tambuwal, who stated this after he was officially admitted as a member of All Progressives Congress (APC), noted that apart from corruption, the PDP had also failed to address issues of youth unemployment and insecurity.

The speaker urged Nigerians to reject the PDP, pointing out that with the support of the electorate, the party would no longer be in office as from May 29, 2015.

According to him: “By the grace of Allah, by this time on May 29, 2015, PDP will be swept off the seat of government.

“I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of emotions since I joined the APC, over which I say, thank you very much. I promise to use this opportunity to lift Nigeria from the evil governance inflicted on it by PDP.”

Tambuwal maintained that Nigeria only needed a change of leadership, adding that since PDP had failed to provide purposeful leadership, he had to quit the party.

We’ll reclaim our mandate from him —PDP
By Leon Usigbe -Abuja

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the party would retrieve the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives from Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, adding that his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a way for God to expose him.

National vice chairman of the party in the zone, Dr Cairo Ojugboh, who made this assertion in a chat with reporters at the national secretariat of the party, in Abuja, on Thursday, said all those who stole from the party would be similarly exposed and flushed out.

“PDP is a very disciplined party. If you come and steal in the PDP and use the PDP to elevate yourself and get into office, when the time comes, God will get you out like the issue of Tambuwal.

“You can see how God has exposed him. PDP will do everything within the law to regain its seat and that is what we are going to do in Edo and Rivers states. We are going back to South-South to regain our seats,” he said.

Also speaking on Governor Rotimi Amaechi or Rivers State, Ojugboh observed that the governor would not be around to hand over to his successor when his tenure expires next year.

Advising party members to ignore Amaechi’s boast, Ojugboh alleged that the governor was already making plans to leave the country.

“I can assure you that come May 29, 2015, Amaechi will not be there in Rivers State to hand over. We know a lot of them. Some persons were boasting like that in Adamawa State, but where are they today?

The zonal national vice chairman denied that some aspirants had been denied the opportunity to obtain nomination form to contest the presidential election.

According to him, “nobody in PDP is denied nomination forms. Everybody that wants to buy has access. We are attending to the complaints coming from the sale of forms.

Police arrest suspected thug over disruption of Delta council poll

A SUSPECTED thug, who attempted to disrupt last Saturday’s council poll at Orhuwohorun Primary School in Ovwian Aladja, Udu Local Council of Delta State, has been arrested by the police.

The Delta Police Spokesman, Mr. Roland Preston, said in Asaba yesterday that while accreditation was going on at wards/units 15, 16, 17 and 19 at Orhuwohorun Primary School during the election, some suspected cultists/political thugs numbering over 50 armed with battle axes, cutlasses and gallons of fuel invaded the premises, chased away officials of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) and voters, and also destroyed some electoral materials.

Preston said that on receipt of the information, some patrol teams swiftly mobilised to the scene and arrested one of the miscreants 25 with a cutlass while others escaped, adding that two other sharp cutlasses were recovered at the scene.

The spokesman said that investigation was still ongoing while efforts are on to track down the fleeing miscreants.

Meanwhile, a group, Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria, has commended Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan for providing an enabling environment for the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) to conduct the recent local council election in the state.

The Chairman, Mr. Paul Isamade, told reporters in Asaba yesterday that voters were able to cast their votes in an atmosphere devoid of intimidation and rancour during last Saturday’s election that held across the 25 local councils of the state.

Costa row continues as Spain doctor refutes Mourinho claims

Costa row continues as Spain doctor refutes Mourinho claims
Oct 30, 2014 10:43:00

The Chelsea manager claimed the striker's lack of involvement since international duty was down to the way he was handled by the national side, which Juan Jose Garcia Cota denies

Diego Costa's club versus country row rumbles on after Spain's team doctor insisted the Chelsea striker did not pick up a fresh injury on international duty.

The 25-year-old striker has scored nine goals in seven Premier League games since arriving during the summer, but has been blighted by a persistent hamstring injury.

That issue, combined with a virus, means he has not featured for Chelsea since playing in Spain's Euro 2016 qualifiers against Slovakia and Luxembourg earlier this month.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho laid the blame for Costa's current absence on his involvement with Vicente del Bosque's side, but Spain team doctor Juan Jose Garcia Cota has refuted those claims.

"This time he [Costa] didn't say anything about the hamstring," Cota told IBTimes UK. "When Costa arrived to the international team he said to us he had a minor hassle in the groin but that it was nothing important.

Obama gives Ebola survivor Nina Pham a bear hug at the White House

 USA OBAMA EBOLA

A bear hug is worth a thousand words? President Barack Obama embraced Ebola survivor Nina Pham in the Oval Office on Friday, shortly after the 26-year-old Dallas nurse was discharged from the National Institutes of Health.

The White House photo op came as the Obama administration struggled to reassure jittery Americans that they should trust medical and scientific authorities and that the deadly disease does not threaten them.

In a show of faith in the nation’s elite doctors and scientists, the White House did not subject Pham to any additional screening before her face-to-face meeting with the president.

“Ms. Pham was tested five different times to confirm that she no longer had the virus,” press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters. “So all the necessary testing that allowed her to safely return home with a clean bill of health is the same guidance that she has gotten in terms of meeting the president.”

Earnest also praised New Yorkers who went about their routines after a Manhattan doctor who had treated Ebola patients in Guinea came down with the disease. Craig Spencer had been closely monitoring his health and reached out to authorities when his temperature spiked. Officials were retracing his movements in the days before he sought treatment at Bellevue Hospital Center, including a walk on the High Line elevated park and a subway ride to a Brooklyn bowling alley. “We understand from reports that subway traffic today was typical for a Friday,” the spokesman said. “I think that’s an indication that the people of New York are feeling confident, as they should, about their safety as they go about their daily business.

“The president would have no qualms about riding the subway in New York or taking a stroll on the High Line, which is, I know, something he would love to do. Or even, you know, bowling a few frames at this bowling alley in Brooklyn,” Earnest said.

For weeks, the president and his top aides have publicly recited a reassuring credo about the disease, which could threaten the world from the outbreak’s epicenter in West Africa.

In briefings and speeches and on the White House website, Obama and his aides have underlined that Ebola cannot be transmitted through the air or through food in the United States. Only people showing symptoms — like high fever, vomiting, diarrhea — are contagious. And the virus is passed only through an afflicted person’s urine, saliva, sweat, feces, vomit, breast milk or semen.

But relentless media attention to the handful of cases in the United States, plus the horrifying way the disease ravages patients, have left many Americans worried that the government is not doing enough to keep them safe.

Obama’s meeting with Pham “should be a pretty apt reminder that we do have the best medical infrastructure in the world, and certainly a medical infrastructure that’s in place to protect the American public. And the track record of treating Ebola patients in this country is very strong, particularly for those who are quickly diagnosed and admitted through the system,” said Earnest.

And “this is a testament today to a young woman who, over the course of doing her job in treating for an Ebola patient, got sick,” the spokesman underlined. “We’re certainly celebrating alongside her.”

The White House learned early on Friday that Pham would be released and reached out to NIH staff “to let her know that the president was interested in meeting her if she felt up to it,” Earnest said.

Asked whether there was any concern about putting the president so close to someone only recently recovered from Ebola, Earnest shrugged: “Yes, he is the president and he was not at all concerned about any risk that would be associated with him showing his gratitude to her by hugging her.”

A Break in the Case of the Missing Mexican Students

Mexico has faced a trying fall since 43 student protestors disappeared. A mass grave found in the country earlier this month was initially thought to contain the students' remains, but genetic testing proved otherwise. Soon after, more bodies were unearthed in a canal outside of Mexico City. Now, another mass grave has been found in Mexico, and this time, authorities believe they may have found the missing students' remains, though the bodies are still being tested.
When the first mass grave was found, a number of authority figures in Iguala, the town in southern Mexico near where the students disappeared, were linked to Guerreros Unidos, a local cartel, including the security chief, mayor, and his wife. One gang member who has been arrested has accused the mayor's wife, María de los Angeles Piñeda, of being "the main operator of criminal activities" in the area.
The newly found grave is in Cocula, Mexico, within 10 miles of where the students were last seen alive. A group of police officers has confessed to leaving the students with the cartel, and two of the gang members eventually led authorities to the grave site. Fifty-six people have been arrested thus far in connection to the case.
Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam may have put some minds at ease when he announced to reporters: "We have the people who carried out the abduction of these individuals." Mexican citizens have been protesting government corruption as authorities continue to work on the case: Demonstrators burned down Iguala's City Hall, marched through Mexico City, and pushed Angel Aguirre, governor of Guerrero, to resign.

Genoa 1-0 Juventus: Champions' unbeaten start comes to an end

Genoa 1-0 Juventus: Champions' unbeaten start comes to an end
Oct 29, 2014 22:40:00
Luca Antonini scored in the dying minutes to give the home side the victory and ensure the visitors' winning run came to an end

Genoa shocked Juventus 1-0 to hand the champions their first league loss since March and sour Gianluigi Buffon's 500th Serie A appearance.

Luca Antonini bundled the winner home from six yards in the 94th minute and, with just 20 seconds of stoppage time remaining, there was no way back for Massimiliano Allegri's men.

Genoa substitute Alessandro Matri - formerly of Juve - drew the attention of two defenders and cut-back to the unmarked Antonini, who saw his unconvincing effort hit the back of the net despite the best efforts of the desperate visitors.

It was a cruel way for Buffon's milestone match to end as a tired Juve lost just their second league match of 2014.

Juve were twice denied by the woodwork on Wednesday, with Fernando Llorente firing into the base of the left post midway through the first half.

Defender Angelo Ogbonna lifted over Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin in the 70th minute, but saw his effort hit the post after the hosts were caught napping at the back.

And those close-calls came back to haunt Juve - playing their fourth match in 12 days - as Antonini netted a dramatic winner.

Juventus remain top of the league, but second-placed Roma beat Cesena to join them on 22 points.

Buffon wore a special captain's armband that simply read '500' for a Juventus side which brought Paul Pogba and Stephan Lichtsteiner back to the starting line up, while Matri started on the bench for the hosts - despite scoring in their 2-1 win at Chievo on Sunday.

After a slow start, Juve - controlling possession - finally turned the screw in the 22nd minute, as Carlos Tevez cut inside and forced a good save from Perin when he tried to fire into the bottom-right corner.

Llorente was next to go close, but shot into the woodwork after showing good control to shield an opponent.

Tevez and Pogba saw efforts from distance go wide as half-time approached and the off-target efforts continued after the break, with Lichtsteiner and Leonardo Bonucci the next culprits.

Buffon made his first save of the night in the 64th minute, tipping a swerving Giovanni Marchese effort over the bar, while at the other end, substitute Alvaro Morata played in Tevez - only for him to smash over from 20 yards.

Ogbonna then had his near miss after he reacted quickest to a header back into the box, only to see his effort come back off the post.

It seems that Nigeria have not heard the last of coach Stephen Keshi as he is set to return to his role in charge of the Super Eagles for next month’s pair of qualifiers against Congo and South Africa.

On Thursday morning, media officer of the Super Eagles, Toyin Ibitoye tweeted that Keshi is set to return to his job.

Goal findings revealed that Keshi has been asked to return to his post as part of reconciliatory moves in the Nigeria Football Federation as ordered by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The President has also asked the faction of Chris Giwa to withdraw its case from court to ensure that Nigeria is not banned by Fifa.

The NFF is yet to release any official statement.

Keshi was relieved of his job on October 16, a day after the Super Eagles defeated Sudan 3-1 in Abuja, by the Amaju Pinnick-led board of the NFF who re-called former coach Shaibu Amodu in an interim capacity.

The African champions had struggled to win just one in four qualifying matches and fans had begun to call for the coach’s sack.

I’m not under pressure, says Asisisat Oshoala

I’m not under pressure, says Asisisat Oshoala

The Super Falcons forward has said she is not hassled going into Saturday’s African Women Championship final against Cameroon in Namibia
Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala has revealed her readiness to lead the Super Falcons to glory when they face Cameroon in the final of the 9th African Women Championship billed for the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek.

The teenage prodigy whose brace sealed her side’s place in the final of the competition as well as a ticket to the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada said she had gathered enough experience at last edition host in Equatorial Guinea.

"This is my second appearance at the African Women Championship. I had my first experience two years ago (in Equatorial Guinea) and it really helped my game at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup,” Oshoala told Cafonline.com.

"I’m not under pressure coming here based on my performance at the U-20 World Cup. I came here to do my stuffs like my coaches tell me on the field – Just do your thing!

"Don’t panic! Just go there and do what you know best. If you are right, fine and if you don’t get it right, keep trying for another chance!.

"I dedicate the goals to my fans [everyone who is been praying for me] family, well-wishers and my teammates in particular,” she added.

On her comparison with legendary Perpetua Nkwocha, the 18-year old striker said playing with her has helped improve her game.

"It’s not an easy thing to be Perpetua [Nkwocha]. She is my role model and I have been working towards it. I try hard each day to get there.

Obama annoyed by weak Ebola response from France, Italy and others

Even as the wobbly U.S. response to Ebola dominated the headlines this week, President Barack Obama ramped up a frustration-powered campaign to get reluctant major allies to shoulder more of the burden of quelling the deadly outbreak at its source in West Africa.

Speaking to reporters after an emergency meeting with top aides on Wednesday, the president put his personal annoyance on full display as he portrayed the international response to the crisis as hesitant and shortsighted and warned that it endangered American national security.

“This is not simply charity,” he intoned. “Probably the single most important thing that we can do to prevent a more serious Ebola outbreak in this country is making sure that we get what is a raging epidemic right now in West Africa under control.”

Obama declared that he had convened a videoconference earlier in the day with leaders of core U.S. allies Britain, France, Germany and Italy “to make sure that we are coordinating our efforts and that we are putting in a lot more resources than, so far at least, the international community has put into this process.”

If Ebola tears unchecked through West Africa, Obama warned, “then it will spread globally in an age of frequent travel and the kind of constant interactions that people have across borders.”

Despite that sense of alarm, U.S. officials say it’s not yet time to “name and shame” specific rich countries that, in some cases, have kicked in less cash than the $25 million that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have pledged.

But the frustration is obvious at every level of the Obama administration. It burst through at State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki’s daily press briefing on Wednesday, when she was asked about Cuba’s contribution to the international response.

“There are some countries that are larger than Cuba that have not contributed as much as Cuba,” she said drily.

And key Obama aides at the White House and in the State Department, as well as sources in Congress, describe Obama as annoyed to the point of anger with countries like France and Italy, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union Council.

Allies like Australia and Canada can also expect escalating U.S. pressure. And officials say China ought to contribute in a way that befits a rising world power.

The “top disappointments are France and Italy — (they) top the list of 'talk most, do least,'” a senior administration official told Yahoo News. The official requested anonymity to describe the situation candidly.

White House aides briefed Congress this week and said France had been "asked to take leadership in Guinea" and "could do more," according to a congressional source.

The tensions were evident in rival French and American accounts of a telephone call between Obama and French President Francois Hollande on Monday.

In the official description released in Paris, Hollande announced that France would build new treatment centers in Guinea. In the White House version of the call, Obama was notably silent on the issue of France’s contributions in the fight against Ebola — but he did thank Paris for its help in the war against the Islamic State militants.

U.S. officials say privately that Australia and Canada should be providing more health care workers. One official predicted that China would unveil some kind of aid package, but that Beijing would tailor it for maximum Chinese economic advantage. “Just watch. It’ll be for Sierra Leone, because: diamonds,” the official said, referring to one of that country’s signature exports.

The international response has been lackluster despite an aggressive U.S. effort to bring global resources to bear on the dangerous tragedy in West Africa.

“We have devised specific asks of virtually every country we think is in a position to contribute,” one official said. “We’ve been in touch, multiple times in some cases, with the countries that are best positioned to help.”

The most frequent requests are for countries to build Ebola treatment units, known inside government as ETUs, or to provide health care workers, purchase medical supplies, or send funds, often through established international groups like the Red Cross or the French-founded Doctors Without Borders.

There’s no clear consensus on why Obama — unpopular at home, nearly a lame duck — has struggled to galvanize the international response to Ebola. Some supporters note that he rallied a vigorous coalition against the IS, and others suggest that many countries just don’t feel the same urgency when it comes to Ebola.

“The volume of African travelers that change planes in European capitals creates an inherently escalated level of risk, so you'd think these governments would want to play a more active role in preventing the virus from landing there,” one U.S. official said.

Driver attacked after ice cream truck kills boy

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Neighborhood residents attacked the driver of an ice cream truck after it struck and killed a 7-year-old boy riding a motorized bike in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The child had been riding alongside the truck on Wednesday when he apparently slipped for an unknown reason and was caught under a rear wheel, police Sgt. Timothy Colson said.

The collision was an accident and the driver, who sustained bruises in the beating, has not been charged, police said. His name was not released.

The driver told police that bricks were thrown at his truck and someone threatened him with a knife. He was taken to a police station for protection. Police were searching for the attackers.

The child died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, said Officer Nuria Venegas, a Los Angeles police spokeswoman.

"I walked outside and he was on the ground, bleeding," Karen Black, who lives in the neighborhood, told KCAL-TV (http://goo.gl/uPMO7F ). "I just tried to comfort the family, you know, because they were hollering and screaming."

Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter identified the child as Jamarion Thomas.

Suarez will make Barca debut in El Clasico, confirms Luis Enrique

Suarez will make Barca debut in El Clasico, confirms Luis Enrique
The Uruguayan will play a role at the Bernabeu after serving his four-month suspension for biting Giorgio Chiellini
Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has confirmed Luis Suarez will play a part in Saturday's Clasico but refused to say whether the Uruguayan will start against Real Madrid.

Suarez is available to make his debut following his summer arrival from Liverpool after completing his biting ban. He was immediately included in the matchday squad and will most likely start on the bench.

Luis Enrique said: "He will have some minutes for sure, how many I cannot say.

"It is a big thing for him, to join up finally with the team and get some minutes.”

Former Barca and Madrid midfielder Luis Enrique admits, however, he has no idea how Suarez will cope with being thrust back into club football in such a high-profile match.

"Each case is totally different," he added. "It depends a lot on the personality of the player."

Suarez will be joined in the squad by defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets, who has overcome a hip injury.

"Busquets is very good. He has trained with everyone and, in theory, is available with no problems," said the Barca boss.

The Catalans head into the contest on top of La Liga, four points ahead of third-placed Real Madrid and have yet to concede in domestic duties.

It has been an impressive start for Luis Enrique, who took over from Gerardo Martino ahead of this season, though he accepts that any slip in standards is likely to be punished by Cristiano Ronaldo and Co.

"We will be coming out against Madrid with the same attitude we have shown all season," he said. "We'll go for the game from the start, look to have control of the ball in their half. We will see if we're capable of that or not.”

Much of the talk coming out of the capital this week has centered on Madrid's comparative lack of preparation time, with los Blancos' Champions League game at Liverpool coming 24 hours after Barca's clash with Ajax.

Notorious police killer to be freed after 50 years

London (AFP) - A man convicted of killing three policemen nearly 50 years ago in "the most heinous crime for a generation" is to be released from prison, officials said Thursday.

The news that 78-year-old Harry Roberts, jailed for the murder of three police officers in 1966, was being freed was sharply condemned by London Mayor Boris Johnson and the body representing the capital's rank-and-file officers.

Roberts and two accomplices were sitting in a van in west London preparing for an armed robbery when they were approached by three unarmed policemen, who they shot dead.

Roberts was jailed for life with a 30-year minimum, although the judge at the time said he did not believe he would ever be released and called it "the most heinous crime for a generation."

Johnson said that Londoners would be "absolutely sickened" by the decision to release Roberts, while the Metropolitan Police Federation called the move "scandalous, hurtful and abhorrent".

No exact date for his release has been revealed but it is expected to take place shortly.

Enyeama tells Caf: Cancel Afcon or risk Ebola spread

The goalkeeper, who is competing for qualification with Nigeria, is worried about the deadly virus being passed on in Morocco and has called on the competition to be shelved

Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has pleaded with the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to consider cancelling January's Africa Cup of Nations due to the risk of Ebola being spread at the tournament.

The virus has killed thousands of people in Africa since the outbreak began earlier in 2014 and there are fears that a tournament involving players, fans and officials congregating from across the continent could spark a major health crisis in Morocco.

Enyeama, whose Super Eagles are likely to have to win both their remaining matches to even have a chance of defending their title in 2015, has called for Caf to start taking calls for Afcon to be shelved until the Ebola danger has been reduced.

"I really wish it doesn't happen with all the people that will be moving around," Nigeria's No.1 told reporters after Lille's 0-0 draw with Everton on Thursday in the Europa League.

"But I'm not Caf. I'm not the one who calls the shots.

Wild card Suarez won't ruin Real Madrid plans, says Ancelotti

Wild card Suarez won't ruin Real Madrid plans, says Ancelotti
Oct 24, 2014 12:01:52

The Italian coach is determined to stick to his gameplan despite the imminent return of the Uruguayan and believes Barca are more motivated under Luis Enrique

Carlo Ancelotti does not believe Barcelona's wild card option Luis Suarez will ruin Real Madrid's chances of winning El Clasico on Saturday.

The Uruguayan has been out of competitive action for four months since being banned from football for biting Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup, but is clear to make his Barca debut against their fierce rivals.

Ancelotti is not concerned that last season's Premier League top goalscorer will disrupt his own plans unduly at Santiago Bernabeu.

"If Luis Suarez plays tomorrow or not, it won't changes our plans," the Italian coach told reporters on Friday. "If he does play, it's not a problem for us.

"Luis Suarez is a fantastic player, I like him a lot. It's good news for football that he is now able to play."

Messi better than Cristiano Ronaldo, insists Suarez

Messi better than Cristiano Ronaldo, insists Suarez
The Uruguay international has nothing but praise for his fellow Barcelona attacker and believes he's undoubtedly the best in the world
Barcelona attacker Luis Suarez has stressed that his Argentine team-mate Lionel Messi is a better player than Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi and Ronaldo have won six Ballons d'Or between them in the past six years - the former emerging victorious four times and the latter twice - and are widely regarded as the two best players around in the game at the moment.

The Portugal star has already netted 15 goals in seven La Liga appearances this term against the Barca man's seven strikes, yet Suarez believes it's the Argentine who is the better of the two irrespective of their record in 2014-15.

"In my opinion Leo is better [than Ronaldo]," Suarez was quoted as saying by Mirror.

"I train and play with Leo every day and he surprises me every day. He is unique.

"Everybody knows what he has brought to Barcelona, what kind of world-class player he is.

“For me he is the best player in the world for what he has already done, and he’s still so young."

Messi and Ronaldo are set to lock horns on Saturday when Madrid host Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Clasico could be Suarez's first official game in the Barca jersey after serving his four-month ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup.

The Uruguayan previously featured in the friendly win over Leon for the Joan Gamper Trophy and the Barcelona B win over Indonesia Under-19, while also gaining some match rhythm wearing the Uruguay jersey earlier this month.
